While I love the versatility and affordability of window air conditioners, I've always hated that they drastically limit access to the window opening.

I began researching options for other window air conditioners and found the perfect solution: the saddle AC.

At first, I was skeptical of the U-shaped design, but I quickly found that this unit type is just as effective as a traditional window air conditioner.

Sure, it's slightly more expensive than typical window units, but the benefits make it worth it.

In this guide, I’ll cover all the best saddle air conditioner options based on cooling power, ease of installation, price, features, efficiency, and more.

Quick Glance - My Recommendations

Saddle ACs Explained

Saddle air conditioners have attracted a lot of attention recently, and not just from me. People everywhere are ditching traditional window air conditioners for saddle units.

After testing several models in my own home and several rental properties, I'm not surprised.

Saddle AC units operate similarly to any window air conditioner, cooling the inside space by pulling air from the outdoors.

The main difference is that a saddle AC is designed with a dip in the middle for easy placement on a window sill, so it takes up much less space than other window air conditioners.

The internal control panel allows you to manage all aspects of the AC, including filter functions, temperature settings, smart features, fan speeds, and more.

Facing outwards through the window is the external portion of your AC, which is meant to pull efficiently and cool air from the outside.[2]

If you don’t want to limit access to the window, a saddle AC is the right choice.

I’ve found that this is the perfect solution for keeping small to medium-sized rooms cool while simultaneously maintaining window access.

ACLAB notes:

Saddle ACs are also known as U-Shaped ACs. They are generally of two kinds. The normal U shaped ACs like Midea U and reverse U shaped ACs like the GE Profile PHNT12CC.

They work on the same principle as traditional or casem*nt window ACs.

CONS

The Midea MAW12V1QWT is my top pick for this category of air conditioners, and there are many reasons for its Editor's Choice status.

First, the 12,000 BTU rating is perfect for cooling large rooms up to 550 square feet; I've even used this model as the main cooling solution for an entire studio apartment.

After using the Midea unit nonstop for 3 months, I was initially worried about increased utility bills.

There was no need to worry, though, even when daytime temperatures averaged 95°F in July. My bills actually went down compared to the previous year thanks to this unit's 5-star energy rating and 15 EER - which essentially makes this one of the most efficient ACs in the market.

In addition to its excellent efficiency rating, Midea's other standout feature is its quiet operation.

Compared to every other air conditioner on this list, the MAW12V1QWT is the most impressive in terms of decibel rating.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (8)

It produces as little as 42 dBA on low fan settings.[3]

Every model on my list is a smart WiFi-compatible AC. I consider this to be a standard feature nowadays that every air conditioner should include, and Midea's WiFi features don't disappoint.

I can easily control the unit from anywhere using the MSmartHome app. I love that it offers voice control features for both Google and Alexa devices.

There's very little to complain about regarding this air conditioner. Still, it's worth noting that the Midea sits higher on window frames than other models.

It blocks more of the window opening than others, especially compared to the GE Profile ClearView, so keep that in mind if your saddle AC to take up as little window space as possible.

Who Should Buy It?

TheMidea MAW12V1QWTis best for those who want not just the most popular U shaped but also arguably the most popular window AC in the market.

The GE Profile ClearView is one of my favorite saddle air conditioners right now. Just like the Midea unit, this one runs on 12,000 BTUs and can maintain temperatures in any place measuring up to 550 square feet.

Other sizes are available if your room is smaller, including the popular 6,000 BTU and 8,000 BTU GE Profile ClearView.

In terms of features and performance, this model is very similar to the Midea MAW12V1QWT.

It has a similar EER rating of 14.6, a similar average noise rating of 42 dBA, and it falls in the same midrange price category.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (10)

The main difference is the reverse U-shaped design of the GE Profile ClearView, which I find to be the standout feature of this air conditioner.

GE specifically engineered this unit to maintain full access to the window opening. I love that I can open and close my window freely to let in natural light and fresh air, even after installing the Profile ClearView.

General Electric has always been ahead of the game when it comes to advancements in AC technology, and the GE Profile ClearView makes that fact obvious.

Unlike other saddle ACs, this one uses ultra-advanced inverter technology, so you can save on energy without sacrificing performance.

The main complaint from GE Profile ClearView customers is that it can be difficult to connect to the compatible SmartHQ app, and some couldn’t connect at all.[4]

I didn’t experience this problem, but if you do, get in touch with GE’s customer support team right away.

CONS

Even though the Soleus Air Exclusive isn't as efficient as the previous models I've reviewed, it's a worthy candidate for the best saddle unit.

Not only is it a great air conditioner, but it also functions as a heater, so you can use it throughout the year.

The heating function is actually why I purchased the Soleus unit in the first place. I installed the appliance in a rental home in Ohio, which is known for its drastic temperature changes from season to season.

After using the Soleus in both the summer and winter, I can honestly say that it performs well for both heating and cooling.

The Soleus unit is available in multiple BTU ratings ranging from 6K to 12K. If you want to take advantage of the heating function, though, your only options are 10K and 12K.

Each of these units is ideal for larger spaces, and the 12K model can even be used in a small apartment.

The inverter technology that drives the Soleus isn't as advanced as the GE Profile ClearView, which accounts for the lower efficiency rating of 12 SEER.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (13)

However, the inverter compressor and its design does grant it one of the quietest ACs. With 38 dB noise level, this AC is almost inaudible.

Aside from the heating function, my favorite thing about the Air Exclusive is its low-profile design.

It sits low on your windowsill, so similar to the GE Profile Clearview, it’s a great choice if you want expansive outdoor views and more light.

Who Should Buy It?

TheSoleus Air Exclusiveis for those who want a reverse-u shaped AC with a heater.

If you’re on the hunt for the most efficient saddle AC, you’ll definitely want to consider the Frigidaire Gallery GSHWQ105WD1.

This energy-saving appliance provides up to 46% annual energy savings compared to a standard AC, and it’s even the winner of the 2023 ENERGY STAR Most Efficient award.

In addition to the impressive 15 SEER rating, this 12,000 BTU unit features an Eco Mode to minimize energy usage wherever possible.

While I’m not a huge fan of my AC turning on and off frequently, I am a fan of saving money, and that’s exactly what the Eco Mode is all about.

Similar in appearance to the Midea air conditioner, the Frigidaire features an upright U design that allows the window to slide directly into the unit.

I find this type of saddle AC to be easy to install, but just like the Midea, it blocks more of the window opening than other models, including the GE Profile ClearViewand the Soleus Air Exclusive.

I’m very impressed with the number of features included with the Frigidaire, including remote control operation, a programmable timer, WiFi and voice control, automatic restart, and even a washable filter for easy maintenance.

The MRCOOL MWUCO8T115 is the perfect choice for smaller rooms measuring up to 350 square feet.

It’s not quite as powerful as the 12,000 BTU units I’ve covered so far, but not everyone needs the power of a 12K AC. If that’s the case for you, consider the MWUCO8T115 instead.

With the lower BTU rating compared to other models, it's no surprise that this is the most affordable option on the list.

Even with its affordability, I've noticed a reduction in my energy bills, especially thanks to this model's eco-mode setting.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (17)

The sound output from this AC is really low, and even at full speed, I’ve never heard it produce more than 42 decibels.

That’s because the entire appliance is designed to insulate your home and provide protection against noise, making it a great choice for offices and bedrooms.

Like the Midea and Frigidaire units, this one features an upright U for easily sliding the window panel into the opening.

That means I don't get full access to my window space, but with the affordable price tag and efficient operation, I can't complain much.

Who Should Buy It?

TheMRCOOL MWUCO8T115is for those who wouldn't mind trying out a marginally cheaper U-shaped AC despite it being not too popular.

The Rise Of Saddle Style Air Conditioners

Saddle air conditioners, sometimes referred to as u-shaped air conditioners or over-the-sill AC, are becoming increasingly popular.

They operate in a similar way to window AC with half of the air conditioner on the outside and half on the inside.

The difference is that a saddle air conditioner has a dip in the middle, so they take up much less of your window space.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (23)

The internal portion of your air conditioner has your controls, filter, and fan to push air into your home.

The external portion has a condenser that draws in the air from outside and cools it. The middle portion acts as a small duct that lets air flow through.

Saddle air conditioners are the next generation of window AC that allows homeowners to enjoy the benefits of a cool, well-ventilated room without completely removing the window.

Benefits Of U-Shaped Over Window ACs

The biggest advantage of choosing a saddle AC is the ability to utilize outdoor air for cooling while minimizing the need for window space.

It's more than just that, though - here are a few more benefits of using a saddle-style air conditioner:

Majority Are Energy Efficient

Because saddle ACs are a newer addition to the HVAC world, they're all designed with energy-efficiency features.

Compared to a traditional window air conditioner, saddle air conditioners are more efficient and have higher average SEER ratings.

ACLAB notes:

Majority of the saddle ACs use the inverter compressor technology which is the key ingredient for high efficiency window ACs.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (24)

They have the Quietest Operation

Because they use modern technology with enhanced internal mechanisms, saddle ACs are designed with quiet operation in mind.

The average window air conditioner produces 55-70 decibels of noise, which is much louder than the 40-50 decibel rating of saddle units.

They are Easy to Install

Only a small amount of window space is needed for installing a saddle unit, so there's much less work involved than a normal window unit.

Plus, all models on this list come with full kits and easy-to-understand instructions.

Enhanced Air Distribution

The innovative design of this type of window air conditioner enhances air distribution.

Not only is cool air more evenly distributed throughout the space, but there’s much less risk of hotspots to ensure a consistent temperature throughout the room.

Low Profile Design

Saddle ACs have the lowest profile for a window AC. The traditional window air conditioner takes up the entire window space, but that’s not the case for an over-the-sill air conditioner.

Thanks to the U-shaped design, this type of AC takes up about 20% of the window space. That means you can still take advantage of outdoor scenery while staying cool.

ACLAB notes:

For a pure unobstructed view from your window, you will need to consider through-the-wall ACs instead.

Factors To Consider When Buying A Saddle Air Conditioner

There's a lot to factor in when deciding on a new air conditioner, and while you can trust me on my recommendations, you also need to know about the main aspects that make a saddle AC good.

Here are the major considerations to factor in when buying this type of window air conditioner:

ACLAB notes:

For a comprehensive walkthrough, read our detailed window AC buying guide.

Measure Your Window & Clearance Carefully

Many of my clients have learned the hard way that not every window air conditioner fits in every window.

That's why it's EXTREMELY important to measure your window clearance carefully. Even if you have a standard-size window, you don't want to skip this step.

Just compare the first two products on this list, and you'll see what I mean.

While both the Midea and the GE Profile ClearView are compatible with most standard windows, their dimensions are different.

The Midea measures 19.17" deep by 21.97" wide by 13.46" high, and the GE Profile ClearView measures 28" deep by 19.63" wide by 12.75" high.

In addition to unit size, it’s also a good idea to consider windowsill clearance. If you enjoy gazing out the window on a sunny day as I do, it’s important to find a unit that blocks as little window space as possible, like the GE Profile ClearView.

Match The BTU Capacity With The Size Of The Room

As with any air conditioner, you need to consider British Thermal Units (BTUs). I won't go into the science behind BTUs, but you should know that each specific BTU rating is meant to cool specific square footage.

5 Best Saddle Air Conditioners (2024 Reviews) (25)

The higher the BTU, the more space it can cool.

Some of these units are available in various BTU ratings, like the Soleus Air.

I use the 12,000 BTU model, but if you’re cooling a smaller space like a bedroom or home office, you also have the options of 6,000 BTU, 8,000 BTU, and 10,000 BTU ratings.

Choose One With A High Efficiency

Energy efficiency has always been a top priority of mine, but with the rising cost of electricity, I’m finding that it’s more important than ever.

If you don’t know anything about air conditioner efficiency, here are some need-to-know basics:

  • The efficiency of an air conditioner is represented as a SEER rating.
  • The higher the rating, the more efficient the model and the less it will cost to run.
  • Most saddle ACs will have a rating of over 10 because they’re built to be energy efficient, but if you can get one above 15, it’s going to save you a lot in the long run.
  • Paying more for the unit upfront could result in some long-term savings. Remember, higher efficiency equates to lowered energy bills, and this can add up over time!
Both the Frigidaire Gallery GHWQ125WD1and Midea MAW12V1QWT have SEER ratings of 15.

Having used both units in similar conditions, I’ve found that the Frigidaire unit offers better performance in this category; it even won the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Award 2023 for this style of air conditioner.[5]

Take Note Of The Noise Levels

Compared to the traditional window air conditioner, the saddle air conditioner benefits from being more modern, therefore having updated internal mechanisms and insulation.

Not only does this help with cooling performance, but it also means quieter operation.

Compared to the standard window air conditioner, which produces 55 to 70 decibels, a saddle air conditioner produces 40 to 50 decibels on average.

None of the units on my list produce more than 42 decibels, so you can count on a good night’s sleep.

If you’re using this air conditioner in a bedroom or any space that requires peace and quiet, I recommend going with the Midea MAW12V1QWT.

This model is specifically designed to filter noise outside, and the company claims that it’s 9 times quieter than traditional units with operation as low as 32 dBA.

What Is Your Budget?

Cost is always a concern of mine, but I also know that cheap units are usually built with cheap parts.

Plus, cheaper units are typically less efficient, which means more money is spent on energy costs in the long run.

Saddle air conditioner units can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 depending on the quality, the BTU rating, and the features.

Even though the Midea MAW12V1QWT is the cheapest option on this list, I feel that its high-efficiency rating makes it the best “bang for your buck” option.

Look For WiFi / Smart Connectivity

I’ve always appreciated a few advanced features in my window air conditioner, like Wi Fi connectivity.

Compared to the past, it’s much easier to find affordable WiFi-enabled ACs that are compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa to set temperature and other controls remotely.

Each saddle air conditioner on this list is WiFi enabled, so no matter which model you go with, you’ll be able to keep the room cool using your smart home devices.

I find the Frigidaire app to be the most comprehensive and easiest to use, but that’s just personal preference.[6]

How To Install U-Shaped Air Conditioners?

Every u-shaped air conditioner is different, but you should be able to install it yourself without professional help.

We’ve given a quick guide below, but always remember to follow the specific user instructions of your air conditioner.

Start by gathering your tools. You’ll need safety gloves, a drill, a screwdriver, insulating foam, and your AC itself. It should come with a support bracket, but if not, you’ll need to get one from your hardware store.

1. Fit Your Bracket

Open your window fully and take the support bracket out of the packaging. Place this, so it runs across the bottom of the window and mark where the holes in the windowsill need to be to hold it in place. Use your drill or screwdriver to secure this in place.

2. Lift Your AC In

Once the bottom bracket is secure, lift the air conditioner to sit on top of the bracket.

The U-shaped section should be right underneath your open window, and you should partially close the window so you can check the AC is in the right place.

You may need a friend to help you with this step because some ACs are heavier than others.

3. Attach The Side Brackets

Attach the two side brackets, which should fit on the side of the AC and into the bottom bracket.

Secure these with screws and then lift down the sidearm hinges to help hold them in place.

4. Measure The Insulating Foam

Measure the distance between the side of the AC and the edge of the window. Add ¼ inch onto this measurement, and then cut this amount from your insulating foam.

This should fit snugly in the sidearm hinge and run right into the window frame.

It’s important this fits snugly to help insulate your home and keep the cold out, so if it doesn’t fit snugly, you should repeat this step.

5. Secure Your Anti Tip Brackets

Middle brackets should then be placed on top of the insulating foam and run from the AC to the window frame. Once these are in place, screw them in so the anti-tip brackets are secure on both sides.

6. Check Your Window Locks

You should now be able to close the window fully, so it fits snugly into the middle anti-tip bracket. There should be a flap on the AC to lock the window down.

This will help to hold your AC in place and secure your home.

7. Install Window Seal

Use some insulating foam along the top of the window so that it is completely sealed. Just measure your foam to the appropriate length and push it into the gap.

8. Check For Gaps

Check for any gaps between the AC and the window where air might come into the room. If there are any, then take small bits of insulating foam and try to cover them up.

9. Plug In Your Saddle AC

Your AC is now ready to use. Plug it into the nearest outlet and switch it on. If you’re not sure it’s working or worry that the AC isn’t secure, then you should get a professional to come and review your work.

FAQs

Do U-Shaped Air Conditioners Need Brackets?

Yes, you do need AC window brackets, and most models will come with them. Brackets are a legal requirement in some states, so it’s not worth trying to install a window AC without them.

How Does The U-Shaped AC Drain?

The support bracket tilts slightly downward out of your window so that condensate can drip out of your home.

Where Can You Buy Saddle Air conditioners At A Good Price?

Online marketplaces like Amazon tend to be the best option for saddle air conditioners and offer a better price than traditional stores.

So, Which Is the Best Saddle AC For You?

The saddle-style air conditioner is a great choice for anyone looking for a window AC that doesn’t remove access to the entire window space.

Because they’re more modern than traditional window ACs, I’ve found saddle units to be more efficient with better performance features.

My favorite unit is the Midea MAW12V1QWT because of its large coverage area, great efficiency rating, and ultra-quiet performance.

However, if you want as much window access as possible, I recommend either the GE Profile ClearView or Soleus Exclusive.

My #1 Recommendation

Midea U-Shaped MAW12V1QWT
  • Extremely efficient and low cost to run
  • Powerful cooling
  • WiFi control via app
